Announcing Seminole Showcase Series 2018-2019

The Seminole Theatre announces its 2018-2019 Seminole Showcase Series.  The wide array of programming is sure to provide something for everyone.  Read about the highlights and more information.

Historic Seminole Theatre and Oak View Group Facilities announce the 2018-2019 Seminole Showcase Series.  

The announced line-up includes a variety of performers from famous singers to tributes, from comedians to magicians, and even a couple firsts for the Seminole Theatre, like an ice skating show.  The Historic Seminole Theatre re-opened in December of 2015 after being shuttered for nearly four decades.  The first three seasons have seen progressively more exciting shows and growing audiences at the theater.  Seminole Theatre Executive Director Mickey McGuire spoke about some of the highlights of the season as well as what changes he has seen since opening the theater.

“When we first opened our season in 2016, we had some very exciting artists on our lineup, but it was difficult to get the word out about everything we were doing here,” recalls McGuire.  “Now that we have three seasons under our belt, we have built a following, and we have also been able to open a dialogue with the community about what they would like to see.”

This year we have Lee Ann Womack opening up our season. We have been trying to bring her to South Florida for the past two years, but this was the first time we were able to make it work out with her schedule, and that should be fun.”  Lee Ann Womack kicks off the season with a concert on September 23 at 7:00pm.  “We also have some familiar groups.  This season we have a return of Chinese Acrobats to the stage with the New Shanghai Circus (February 9, 2019) and we’re also bringing back a group of comedians on the Irish Comedy Tour, who will headline our St. Patrick’s Day Celebration (March 16, 2019).”

So what has changed from season one to season four? “I think what has been most exciting is that we are able to take some chances.  We work all year long scouting artists and really trying to find the best acts to bring to South Florida.  In the past, we’ve found some shows where we say to ourselves ‘Wow, this show is so great…but I have no idea how we would ever sell tickets.’  We took some chances last year with groups like the Well Strung string quartet or Runa – The Irish Celtic Folk band, and people really gave us a chance and came out!”  McGuire gave the scoop on what shows to look out for in this coming season.  “I think all of the shows on the season are fantastic, obviously, but I guess I think there are a few that might fly under some peoples’ radar, and they should really give another look.  We have a world-renowned pianist, Julian Gargiulo, who is coming to Homestead after playing Carnegie Hall, and every time I talk to him he’s in another country.  What you wouldn’t guess is that 

he’s also this really engaging, funny guy, and he has a way of involving the entire audience.  You don’t need to be a classical music buff to enjoy the show, and to see a world-renowned artist like Julian for just $20-$30 is a steal.” (January 27, 2019).

The season, which runs from October to May, has a total of eighteen performances, an increase over prior seasons which averaged 12 concerts.  Many of the performances also line up with holidays or events, with shows planned for Oktoberfest (Vocaldente – Germany’s premier vocal group) , Valentine’s Day (Two on Tap , a song and dance homage to some of the best performing couples of the golden age of movies ), St. Patrick’s Day (Irish Comedy Tour), and Mother’s Day (Lakisha Jones – To Whitney, with Love, a tribute to Whitney Houston and the divas of years past).

The Seminole Theatre has done well in the past few seasons highlighting well-known performers, from Jon Secada to Art Gargunkel, from Judy Collins to John Popper.  The 2018-2019 season will certainly not be without its stars.  In addition to season opener Lee Ann Womack , the line-up also features a queen of rock and roll, as girl group superstar Ronnie Spector returns to the stage with her band Ronnie Spector and the Ronnettes.  Ronnie Spector first sang her way into hearts more than half a century ago with classics like “Be My Baby”, “Walking in the Rain”, and “Baby, I Love You”. Today The Ronettes’ queen bee takes the stage with the same charm and charisma that made her a star, delivering her inspired and soulful vocals with dazzling elegance while she sways to the swinging beat. At her shows Spector and her talented band perform hits from throughout her storied career, bringing to life the signature Wall of Sound for audiences to hear in person. She’s an enduring legend who hasn’t missed a beat, and ticket buyers shouldn’t miss any opportunity to see her shine in concert.  Ronnie Spector will play the Seminole Theatre on January 31, 2019.

Are there any shows that McGuire is looking forward to personally?  “There are always a couple shows that have me just as intrigued as the audiences.  With some artists, you more or less know what it is that you’ll get on stage.  With some others, you may really not.  We have three shows this year that intrigue – or scare – me for different reasons.  Those shows are Broadway’s Next H!T Musical, The Naked Magicians, and Peter Pan and Friends…on Ice.”

Broadway’s Next H!T Musical, playing February 22nd, is an improvisational musical theater performance. Master improvisers gather made up, hit song suggestions from the audience and create a spontaneous evening of music, humor, and laughter. The audience votes for its favorite song and watches as the cast turns it into a full-blown improvised musical – complete with memorable characters, witty dialogue, and plot twists galore.  “I’ve seen them do it live,” says McGuire “and it was HILARIOUS.  What will happen at the Seminole Theatre?  I can’t say for sure, but I trust they’ll make it memorable.”  The Naked Magicians, playing October 14, are two Australian magicians and performers who go by the motto ‘Good magicians don’t need sleeves and great magicians don’t need pants.’  The hunky Australian duo has been seen on London’s West End, in 200+ cities around the world, and by over 50 million on TV (NBC, ABC, FOX, iTV), and now they come to show their stuff on the Seminole Theatre stage.

“The show I expect to get the most questions about is Peter Pan and Friends on Ice.  As soon as we thought we might be able to make this work at the Seminole, we knew we had to book it.  I don’t want to give away how it works, but suffice to say, we will have figure skaters on stage.”  Peter Pan and Friends will play on March 14, 2019. 

Another aspect of the growing season is the support the Seminole Theatre receives from local businesses.  A classic rock series, presented by K&G Cycles, is being presented as part of the Showcase Series this year.  The mini series is comprised of American Floyd – The Ultimate Pink Floyd Experience (November 10) and Forever Young (January 4). Forever Young is one part theatrical show, one part musical tribute. Set in a suburban basement, Forever Young is jam-packed with powerhouse vocals, dynamite choreography and, most importantly, a story of 5 best friends who discover a record player can truly change everything. 

McGuire offered up his thoughts on the partnership.  “I’ve had the opportunity to work closely with George Marakas at K&G Cycles as he’s also an important figure in our business community and as a scholar and author.  Mr. Marakas was passionate about bringing some great, classic rock performers to South Florida and was hands-on in picking the artists.  I would not be at all surprised if these are two of the most successful shows we have had here.”

The season is rounded out with modern folk trio A Band Called Honalee on November 1, The Chipper Experience, Where Comedy and Magic Collide on January 12, Presidio Brass, modern brass quintet on February 8, Sandy Hackett’s Rat Pack Show on March 23, and Sweet Plantain Latin/Jazz String Quartet on April 13.

We’ve taken all your feedback and are gearing up to announce the 2016-2017 Seminole Showcase Series.  The announcement comes August 26th.

The inaugural Seminole Showcase Series brought lots of excitement to the renvoated Seminole Theatre in downtown Homestead.  The Seminole stage lit up for the likes of Jon Secada, The Wailers, Brandy Clark, and many others. We listened to all the feedback from the community and patrons like you, and we’re excited to bring together an expanded Showcase Series for the 2016-2017 Showcase Series.

You’ve know the Seminole Theatre as a venue for great music, and that won’t change.  Whether you like country, classic rock, oldies, blues or everything in between, you’ll enjoy the world-class artists booked to play at the Seminole. But many people asked for more than music, and we’re happy to deliver.  Whether you want to see Theater, Comedy Shows, Acrobats or Family Programming, our series will have a little something for everybody.

Make a night of it and stay for our first presentation of Sci-Fi Summer, WLRN Radio Theater presentation of War of the Worlds.  Many people have heard of Orson Welles’ infamous radio broadcast  which sent the public into a frenzy before realizing it was just a rendition of HG Well’s classic sci fi novel War of the Worlds.  WLRN and Arts Radio Network have partnered with the Seminole Theatre to re-produce the radio broadcast, with live actors on stage acting out the broadcast along with sound effects and audience participation.

Ginsberg Productions Announces 2016-2017 Season

Ginsberg Productions is back again!  Ginsberg Productions announces the 2016-2017 Season at the Seminole Theatre.

Ginsberg Productions proudly kicks off its 2016-2017 season at the historic Seminole Theatre on Krome Avenue the weekend before Halloween with two performances of “The Rocky Horror Show ” in October 2016.

The Seminole Theatre originally opened in 1921 as a cinema showing silent movies. It has recently been refurbished and the October production of “Rocky” will be anything but silent.

“Come dressed in costume and be prepared to dance in the aisles and celebrate with Brad and Janet, Frank ‘N’ Furter, Magenta, Columbia, Riff Raff and rest of the Transylvanian Rocky cast,” suggests Debra Ginsberg, Executive Producing Artistic Director.

Appropriately, the show will open on Friday October 28 at 8 p.m. with a second performance Saturday October 29 also at 8:00 p.m.

The Rocky Horror Show is live theatrical entertainment and is a humorous tribute to the science fiction and horror B movies of the late 1940’s through early 1970’s. The musical tells the story of a newly engaged couple getting caught in a storm and coming to the home of a mad transvestite scientist unveiling his new creation, a muscle man named Rocky Horror.

Following its 1973 London opening, the musical stage play was adapted into the 1975 film “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” It has since developed a worldwide cult following and has the longest-running release in film history.

About Ginsberg Productions:

Debra Ginsberg, formerly from Greenwich , CT, has been both performing in and producing theatre since she first arrived on the scene in Miami 1999. Having worked as a former Board Member, Co-Producer and Director of CATS for The Miami Children’s Theater under Angie Ardolino, Co-Founder, former Board Member and Executive Producting Artistic Director of The Miami Acting Company, former Board Member and it’s Executive Producing Artistic Director of the Friend of the Key Largo Cultural Center, she finally realized her dreams of opening her own 501(c)3. Ginsberg Productions, a 501(c)(3) not for profit theatrical production company, was started in April 2013 and is dedicated to producing an awareness and an appreciation of the performing arts by providing live, quality theatrical performances at very affordable prices within the Monroe and Miami–Dade counties and surrounding areas. In addition to providing a vehicle for performing artists we provide a supportive and creative work opportunity for members of the Florida-based theatre community, enabling the creation and production of new works for adults and children. Our uniqueness is two-fold in that, in the past we have choosen to support philanthropic causes by allowing them to utilize our productions for their fundraising needs and we have gone into assisited living facilites and provided first-class entertainment at no cost to it residents and staff. We have on one occasion brought in 900 students for a behind the scenes look at the workings of a live theatrical production.

Sci-Fi Summer

The Historic Seminole Theatre is preparing for an alien invasion this summer! WLRN Radio Theater’s Sci-Fi Summer will give thrills and chills to sci-fi lovers of all ages.

The aliens will be returning to the Seminole Theatre after a 40-year hiatus, as two of the most popular sci-fi stories will be brought to life right in front of your eyes.
Sci-Fi Summer is presented by Arts Radio Network Theatre Project and WLRN Public Media in partnership with the Seminole Theatre.

About the Performances
These shows are accurate recreations of radio plays from the golden age of radio, with professional actors performing multiple roles and utilizing authentic sound effect devices. These plays are very interactive, with the audience providing many of the sound effects themselves! Each event will include a post-show Talk back session, where the audience can ask questions about the play, its history and the production. In addition, our friends at the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium are providing us with Science Fiction vs. Science Facts for each show program, written by their expert education team. They’re sure to spark your curiosity!

78 years ago, Orson Welles and his Mercury Theatre on the Air presented their version of H.G. Wells’s classic story, and it became the most infamous radio broadcast of all time. Many of the listeners believed what they heard on the radio was real and reportedly ran out of their homes screaming while others packed up their cars and fled. WRLN Radio Theater brings the original script back to life, reimagined live on the Seminole Stage!

The late, great Edward D. Wood Jr.’s cult classic has been adapted for the stage! Plan 9 from Outer Space played on television in relative obscurity until 1980, when authors Harry and Michael Medved dubbed the film the “worst movie ever made”. Both Wood and his film were posthumously awarded two of Medveds’ Golden Turkey Awards, as the Worst Director Ever and Worst Film, respectively. Free Concert from Nu Deco Ensemble!

Nu Deco Ensemble, Miami’s virtuosic and eclectic chamber orchestra designed for the 21st century, will present a FREE daytime public concert at the Seminole Theatre on Thursday, May 26th.  

Through exciting and adventurous classical music performances, Nu Deco Ensemble presents various styles of music, art, and media collaborations in both traditional and alternative venues.

Working in conjunction with local musicians, composers, DJs, dancers, visual and media artists, Nu Deco Ensemble creates a new hybrid of compelling musical and multi-media experiences. Blending masterful musicianship with a wide range of repertoire from classical to pop, Nu Deco Ensemble strives to be South Florida’s leader in genre-bending musical exploration.

After a week of free performances at the Seminole Theatre for local schools in Homestead, Florida City, and South Miami-Dade County, Nu Deco Ensemble will also present a FREE daytime performance open to the general public on Thursday, May 26th at 12:00pm noon.

Military Appreciation Month

The Seminole Theatre celebrates Military Appreciation month and supports our Veterans

May is Military Appreciation Month and the Historic Seminole Theatre in downtown Homestead is pleased to offer things to do for military veterans and the general public.

On May 21st, the Combat Hippies, a group of Military Veteran Performing Artists will present “Conscience Under Fire” on the Seminole Stage. “Conscience Under Fire” is an original Spoken Word Theater piece that ranges from powerful to humorous and features solos and group work. The group shares their military and Veteran experiences to raise awareness of veteran’s issues and promote Post-Traumatic Growth.

The Seminole Theatre has partnered with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4127, and every Premium Ticket ($47) purchased for the Combat Hippies will sponsor a Military Veteran to see “Conscience Under Fire” and attend a talk-back after the show with the group. 

Led by world renowned theater artist and director Teo Castellanos and backed by one of Miami’s most well-known DJ’s, Brimstone 127, The Combat Hippies are a group of military veteran performing artists. The group’s core members consist of Hipolito “Beardman” Arriaga, Anthony “I.E.D.” Torres, Allen “Tatsel” Minor, and Andrew “Dru Phoenix” Cuthbert.

On Memorial Day weekend, strap on your boots and come down to the Seminole Theatre for Country Night.  See headliner CMA and Grammy Nominated country singer Brandy Clark performing live. Brandy Clark’s first single from her new album, “Girl Next Door” was recently released and has made it to several Top 40 Country lists. Brandy Clark plays the historic Seminole Theatre Memorial Day Weekend, Saturday May 28th at 8:00pm.

Opening for Brandy Clark is country rock group Levon.

Congress designated May as National Military Appreciation Month in 1999 to ensure the nation was given the opportunity to publically demonstrate their appreciation for the sacrifices and successes made by our service members – past and present.

The Seminole Theatre is here for the community, but it takes a community to keep it running!  Opportunities to volunteer range  from being a volunteer usher at performances and events to helping promote the Seminole Theatre in the community to getting involved with the Friends of the Seminole Theatre in fundraising and event planning. 

What do you get?  First and foremost, volunteers receive our undying gratitude!  However, volunteer ushers have the opportunity to watch some of the performances they work at, and volunteers are first in line for any other special perks.

We are also currently accepting internships for Management, Programming, and Marketing.  Interested parties should  sign up below and we will contact with further details.
