“Isn’t it wonderful the way things are changing” remarks the wealthy, Jewish retiree, Daisy Werthan to her African-American chauffeur, Hoke Coleburn in response to the rapid changes taking place at the end of the 1950s. Hoke’s response; “Things changin’, but they ain’t change all that much.”
Daisy Werthan’s life spans from 1888 to 1973. On stage we witness her last twenty-five years. It is no accident that Uhry chose to begin his play in 1948, a time when the status quo and comfortable middle class values were finally being challenged by a generation that would ultimately reject materialism in favor of peace, love and understanding. This was a time when anti-Semitism was openly exposed and the civil rights movement began to surface. The past was no longer a place to hide. Accountability came knocking at the door.
Under the direction of Phillip M. Church, What if Works is now bringing this landmark play to life at the Seminole Theatre in Homestead featuring a stellar cast of seasoned actors: Harriet Devine as Daisy Werthan, Nimmond Lockheart as her chauffeur, Hoke Coleburn and Chris Coppola as Daisy’s son, Boolie.

The Seminole Theatre Players is calling auditions for roles in the production of Hairspray, the musical, and we want to see YOU in the show! All ages, types, and experience levels are encouraged to audition. There are two days of open calls – you only need to attend ONE day of open calls.
Tuesday, May 23 7:00-10:00pm at the Seminole Theatre
Wednesday May 24 7:30-10:30pm at Lucky’s Saloon for Karaoke Open Call
After open calls, you may be invited back to callbacks on Thursday, May 25th at the Seminole Theatre from 7:00-10:00pm.
Audition Guidelines
For Tuesday’s open call, please prepare 16 measures of an upbeat song or ballad in your key. Choose a piece that you are comfortable with and one that shows off your strength. *SHEET MUSIC IS REQUIRED* – CD’s or acapella would NOT be permitted. First time picking an audition song? Read this helpful article. and feel free to contact us if you need help with sheet music – we’ve got lots of it!
If you’re more comfortable singing Karaoke – come to Wednesday’s open call at Lucky’s Saloon, just down the street from the Seminole. No sheet music is required, just bring yourself, your friends, and maybe pick up some liquid courage at the bar.
Dancers should be prepared to learn a routine. Everyone wear comfortable clothing and dance shoes.
Cast
Hairspray is a diverse show set in inner city Baltimore in the 1960s. Actors of all ages, race and body type are encouraged to audition. Due to the nature of the show, some roles are specific to certain ethnicities and to respect the nature of the play, we will make best attempts to cast as such. Take the first steps by participating in the Seminole Theatre’s Musical Theatre Conservatory Camp. During this intensive four-week camp, campers will learn how to become a triple threat (actor, singer, dancer) from industry professionals and specialists with a focus on scene study, choreography, vocal training and song interpretation. In addition, campers will learn the ins and outs of auditions, theater production, and rehearsal preparation, all while having fun, making friendships, and working inside a professional theater. Campers will work toward their own musical theater showcase, presented on the Seminole Theatre stage for family and friends on the final Friday of class.
All campers receive:
- 5 days (40 hours, Monday – Friday, 9AM – 5PM)

Tuition
Camp tuition to The Seminole Theatre Musical Theatre Conservatory is $600 for four weeks Each session will have a maximum of 40 students (ask about a sibling discount). You can reserve a spot in the camp by paying a non-refundable deposit of $100 by April 1st for Session One and by May 1st for Session Two with the balance due on the first day of camp.

New Year’s resolutions are hard. Often those resolutions can be hard to stick to, but this year the Seminole Theatre is making it easier for locals to resolve to see more art and live performances!
Muddy On The Waters – Blues Tribute– Saturday, Jan 21st, 8:00pm
The first performance of the new year is renowned blues artists paying tribute to the father of modern Chicago blues, none other than Muddy Waters, featuring the Nighthawks and Mud Morganfield – the eldest son of Muddy Waters himself.
The Nighthawks were originally established in 1974 and have been a blues staple ever since. They were frequently seen opening for not only Muddy Waters, but also James Cotton and Carl Perkin in addition to backing up John Hammond and Carl Perkins. Mud Morganfield was raised by his mother and often heard the nicknames of “Muddy”, “Muddy Jr.” and “Little Muddy”. Morganfield is now ready to honor his pops and his music. “I started to sing to show the world that dad left me here. I love and am proud to sing his songs just like I love and will always be proud of him. I’m not Muddy Waters and I’m certainly not trying to be Muddy Waters. I’m Mud Morganfield. But when I’m up on stage I always feel pops is there with me and it means so much that I can get on stage and keep his music alive around the world.”

The roots of Artrageous were set years ago, by a group of hardworking friends looking to explore the Arts and to travel and experience the world.20 plus years and over 2500 national and international performances later, these same friends who started as Street Performers on Granville Island in Vancouver, have come full circle and back to their roots to create Artrageous.
This fun, engaging, inclusive celebration of the arts will please all ages. On Halloween itself, Monday, October 31st, plan to leave a bowl of candy out and treat yourself to a night at the Seminole Theatre for the radio theater presentation of Dracula. Part of the Seminole on the Air Series, a partnership between the Seminole Theatre, WLRN Radio Theater and the Arts Radio Network Theatre Project, Dracula is a live re-production of Orson Welles’ original radio theater broadcast with the Mercury Theater in 1938. The performance will feature an authentic script, live actors and live sound effects. More adventurous theater-goers may also want to check out Ginsberg Productions’ presentation of The Rocky Horror Show. Richard O’Brien’s musical is a humorous tribute to the science fiction and horror B movies of the late 1940s through to the early 1970s, telling the story of a newly engaged couple getting caught in a storm and coming to the home of a mad transvestite scientist unveiling his new creation. The stage show was later adapted to the cult film The Rocky Horror Picture Show, but Ginsberg Productions will present the original live musical production. Performances are October 28 and 29, both at 8:00pm. Audience members are encouraged to dress up and participate. A participation script and allowable props can be foundHERE. If you’re looking for a fun event for the whole family, come by Sunday evening, October 30th and join Impact Painting for a night full of laughter on the Seminole Theatre terrace as you paint a fun, spooky Halloween painting you can take home. Meet & greet locals in the community, munch on hors d’oeuvres, enjoy a unique experience and support a good cause. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Jariia Williams Cerebral Palsy Foundation Inc.
No Painting experience is necessary! All materials are included and hors d’oeuvres will be served. Adult tickets are $27 and children are $22.
