South Dade High school guitar phenom AJ Gaytan & local band The Catch to open for legendary blues artist Charlie Musselwhite.
The Seminole Theatre is proud to serve the mission of both bringing world class artists to Homestead and featuring talented local performers. On Thursday, March 31st, we have the opportunity to do both.
Local guitar player, signer and all around performer AJ Gaytan hails from South Dade Senior High School and has quickly gained notoriety in the community. He has been seen playing all over the county with various bands and recently opened for Los Lobos. Gaytan plays with the soul of a musician far beyond his own years. He’ll be teaming up with band The Catch to show off some blues repertory, opening for blues harmonica legend Charlie Musselwhite at the historic Seminole Theatre.

Fifty years of nonstop touring, performing and recording have reaped huge rewards. Charlie Musselwhite is living proof that great music only gets better with age. This man cut his (musical) teeth alongside Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf and everyone on the south side of Chicago in the early 1960’s – thank your lucky stars he is still with us telling the truth with a voice and harp tone like no other.
Charlie Musselwhite may be the only musician to get a huge ovation just for opening his briefcase. Fans know that’s where he keeps his harmonicas and they’re about to hear one of the true masters work his magic on the humble instrument.
Musselwhite is, and always will be, a bluesman of the highest order. But he’s taken blues harp from the clubs on the Southside of 
Chicago (where “Memphis Charlie” and Mike Bloomfield backed Big Joe Williams) to places it’s never been before, both musically and physically. He’s soloed to “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” with Cyndi Lauper on Good Morning America; wailed on “Echo Bells” with Japan’s Kodo drummers (produced by the Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart); and mixed blues with Cuban son legend Eliades Ochoa, each playing on the other’s album. He’s jammed on stage with Mick Jagger and recorded with such diverse artists as INXS, Tom Waits, bluegrass fiddler Vassar Clements, gospel Blind Boys of Alabama, and even Cat Stevens. And shortly before winning the Grammy for Best Blues Album for their collaboration Get Up!, he and Ben Harper played at the White House for President Obama and the First Lady, in a salute to Memphis soul.

Do you have what it takes? Ginsberg Productions is calling auditions for roles in next seasons productions of “Hairspray” and “The Rocky Horror Show”.
Auditions are open to the public and anyone may audition regardless of experience. Ginsberg Productions is a non-profit, community based, theatrical organization and actors are not compensated for appearances.
Ginsberg Productions auditions are open to all interested persons, regardless of age, race, color or experience. All that is required is the desire to be involved in a production and the willingness to commit your time and effort to the project.
Rehearsals are typically 2 nights a week and Sunday afternoons for 6-8 weeks before production.
Ginsberg Productions makes a concerted effort to contact everyone who has auditioned to let them know if they are cast or not. This is done the week following auditions.

Auditions will be held in the Seminole Theatre Tuesday May 31 and callbacks will be Thursday June 2; auditions will go from 7:00 PM TO 9:00 PM.

Prepare a one-minute comedic or one-minute dramatic monologue.
For Our Musical Auditions
• Anyone can audition. No show is pre-cast. See the list of roles below.
• All auditions are held at the Seminole Theatre.
• To audition you are asked to sing 32 bars of a song you have prepared. An accompanist will be provided to play for you. Please bring sheet music.
• You will be asked to learn a choreographed movement or dance routine even if you are not a dancer.
• You may be asked to read from the script. Scenes will be given to you to look over at that time.
• You will ask on site when to make callbacks. If you are not called back, you are still under consideration.

The Rocky Horror Show is a musical with music, lyrics and book by Richard O’Brien. A humorous tribute to the science fiction andhorror B movies of the late 1940s through to the early 1970s, the musical tells the story of a newly engaged couple getting caught in a storm and coming to the home of a mad transvestite scientist unveiling his new creation, a sort of Frankenstein-style monster in the form of an artificially made, fully grown, physically perfect muscle man named Rocky Horror, complete “with blond hair and a tan”.

Good girl who is madly in love with Brad. Always seems to be frightened of something. Keeps losing more of her clothes throughout the story. Emotionally weak and caves into pressure easily.

Follows our two hero’s through the story by narrating directly to the audience.
RIFF RAFF: Male, (Range: High Rock Tenor, D3-B4)
Creepy man resembling more of a zombie. Often makes harmless conversation seem awkward and foreboding. One of Frank’s servants.

Eddie, delivery man, “went to pieces.” Misses the rock and role of life. Comes back to life only to die after his solo. Scott is Eddie’s Uncle.

It’s 1962 in Baltimore, and the lovable plus-size teen Tracy Turnblad has only one desire — to dance on the popular Corny Collins Show. When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star. She must use her newfound power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a TV network, all without denting her ‘do!

Tracy Turnblad – A pleasantly plump teenager with a big heart who has dreams of being a dancing star - as
soon as she’s out of detention for her big hair. Tracy isnft afraid to be herself and stand up for what she believes in.

while. Played by Harvey Fierstein on Broadway, and John Travolta in the movie, this drag role requires a strong
comic male performer who is ready for his inner woman to take the spotlight. Edna is not a man pretending to be a
woman, she is all woman! Just, you know, with a distinctive voice. Performs in 5+ numbers including ”You’re
Timeless To Me.” Tenor.
Wilbur Turnblad - Tracy’s goofy father, who owns the Har-De-Har Hut joke shop and is still madly in love with
his wife, Edna. He encourages Tracy to follow her dreams. Performs in 2+ numbers including ”You’re Timeless To
Me.” Baritone.
Corny Collins - the exciting, confident dancing and singing host of his own TV dance show (think American
Bandstand at its inception). Corny is in favor of Tracy and racial integration. Performs in 4+ numbers including
”Nicest Kids In Town” and ”Hairspray.” Tenor.
Penny Pingleton - Tracy’s slightly dorky, but lovable best friend who is often by her side (when not grounded for
life by her mother, Prudy). Falls head over heels for Seaweed. Performs in 4+ numbers including ”Mama, I’m A Big
Girl Now” and ”Without Love.” Belt.
Amber von Tussle – bratty, selfish resident princess of The Corny Collins Show. Her mother’s daughter through
and through, she is willing to do anything to win the Miss Teenage Hairspray pageant. Council Member. Performs
in 7+ numbers including ”Cooties.” Belt.
Velma von Tussle – Amber’s slim and attractive but overbearing mother who pushes her daughter to seek
stardom. Velma is the scheming producer of The Corny Collins Show who tries to steer it in the ’white’ direction.
Her sensitivities are offended at the very sight of Tracy. A great villainess role. Performs in 4+ numbers including
”Miss Baltimore Crabs”. Belt.
Link Larkin – Teenage heartthrob, aspiring young Elvis, and male lead dancer on The Corny Collins Show. Falls in
love with Tracy (Amber is soooo jealous!). Council Member. Performs in 7+ numbers including ”It Takes Two.”
Crooning Baritone.
Seaweed J. Stubbs - Motormouth Maybelle’s son and a talented dancer on The Corny Collins Show, but only
allowed on ”Negro Day.” Ends up in detention with Tracy. Falls in love with Penny. Performs in 4+ numbers
including ”Run And Tell That.” Tenor.
Motormouth Maybelle - the sassy Corny Collins ”Negro Day” DJ. Owner of a record store and mother to
Seaweed and Little Inez. Plus-sized, she helps Edna find pride in herself. Performs in 3+ numbers including ”Big,
Blonde & Beautiful” and ”I Know Where I’ve Been.” Soulful Alto.
Little Inez – Seaweed’s little sister and just as talented a dancer. Tries to audition for The Corny Collins Show but
is turned away because she is black by Velma. Performs in 3+ numbers including ”Run And Tell That.” Belt.
The Dynamites - Judine, Kamilah, and Shayna . Talented black vocal trio a la The Supremes. Featured in many
numbers together and usually in tight harmony. May double for other ensemble roles like ‘Cindy Watkins,’ etc.
Council Members - Tammy, Brad, Fender, Brenda, Sketch, Shelley, IQ, Lou Ann . Dancers and singers on The
Corny Collins Show. Perform in 5+ numbers including ”Nicest Kids In Town” and ”You Can’t Stop The Beat.”
Other Students - Gilbert, Duane, Lorraine, Stooie, Thad . Kids we find in detention, and most in Motormouth
Maybelle’s record shop. Perform in 4+ numbers including ”Welcome to the 60’s” and ”You Can’t Stop The Beat.”
Female Authority Figure – The roles of Prudy Pingleton (Penny’s uptight mother), the sadistic gym teacher, and
the prison matron are often played by one cameo performer.
Male Authority Figure – The roles of Harriman F. Spritzer (President of Ultra Clutch cosmetics, Corny Collins
show sponsor), the high blood pressure principal, and Mr. Pinky (owner of a plus-sized dress shop) are often played
by one cameo performer.

Hairspray and Ethnicity and Body Types
In general, you have to physically glook the part to play a theatrical role. A strong component of the Hairspray
story revolves around race in the 1960’s, as well as specific body types and ages. It is our goal to have the
following characteristics appear on the stage to forward the story:
. Black/African-American
. White/Caucasian
. Plus-sized (Pleasantly plump!)
. Notably slimmer than plus-sized
Several roles in the play do not call for a specific ethnicity or body type.

Try something heavenly for Valentine’s Day weekend at the historic Seminole Theatre,
with a concert by country, blues, roots-rock performer Paul Thorn on February 12th, 2016 and a Wine & Chocolate Pairing on February 14th, 2016.
“The Seminole Theatre is hosting many exciting events in February. We welcome Paul Thorn to the Seminole Showcase Series, joining other renowned artists, including Jon Secada, The Wailers and The Drifters, to come to Homestead during our inaugural season. Plus we’ll have a delectable Wine & Chocolate Pairing sure to delight even the most discerning palates,” said Seminole Theatre Executive Director Mickey McGuire.
Raised in Tupelo, Mississippi like the King of Rock & Roll Elvis Presley, Americana artist Paul Thorn distinguished himself early on in his career with a live-performance energy that has enraptured audiences with his roots-rock music. Thorn’s latest album Too Blessed To Be Stressed, which he describes as a collection of “positive anthem songs”, stakes out new territory for the popular songwriter and performer. Opening for Thorn is Jennings and Keller, a Miami-based acoustic duo known for ‘Fusion Folk Americana’—a blend of many different elements that comes from the duo’s vast and wide-ranging musical backgrounds, from the Broadway musicals of New York to the honky tonks of West Texas. With the release of their debut CD, Susan’s House (2007) Jennings and Keller quickly gained recognition as well as several songwriting awards throughout the country.
At the Valentine’s Day Wine & Chocolate Pairing, attendees will learn to expertly combine sensational wines with unique chocolate during the one-hour class. Participants will try five wines paired with five distinct chocolates. Event entry is $25 per person and includes the class, wine and chocolate during the class. The Seminole Theatre hosted the Homestead Center for the Arts Bea Pesko Lunchtime Lecture Series on Monday, February 1, 2016.
Fittingly, the lecture was about the history of the Seminole Theatre and titled the Past, Present and Future of the Seminole Theatre.

Opening Act for Paul Thorn
Jennings and Keller is Laurie Jennings Oudin and Dana Keller, an acoustic duo based out of Miami, FL. They bring a wealth of experience to their collaboration, from the Broadway musicals of New York to the honky tonks of West Texas. Their music is called ‘Fusion Folk Americana’—a blend of many different elements that comes from their vast and wide-ranging musical backgrounds. With the release of their debut CD, ‘Susan’s House’(2007), and their second CD ‘As The Universe Unfolds’(2009), Jennings and Keller quickly gained recognition as well as songwriting awards throughout the country. In 2007 alone, they were winners or finalists in 5 different songwriting competitions across the country. 2012 marked the release of ‘Mirror With a Memory’, Jennings and Keller’s most sophisticated and expansive collection of songs to date. Lee Zimmerman, with The Palm Beach New Times, says of ‘Mirror’, “…a lovely and enticing 12-song set that spotlights their songwriting prowess and supple skillful delivery”. Laurie is a former Shakespearean actress who has spent many years on the stage. Her theater background combined with a lifetime of professional singing gives her an obvious command of the stage as well as the songs she sings. Dana Keller is a veteran pedal steel, dobro and guitar player who has spent years performing on stage or in the studio with such luminaries as Vince Gill, Ricky Skaggs, Stevie Wonder, Larry Graham, Marvin Gaye, Dave Mason, Johnny Rodriguez and The Allen Brothers, to name a few. Dana has been an endorsee of the Gretsch Guitar and Drum Company since 1980. His dobro playing has been called ‘jaw-droppingly good’. The synergy created from these two diverse talents is apparent in the responses they are getting from festival directors, club owners, and audience members. Laurie’s and Dana’s music is not easy to define, but will leave a lasting impression on all who listen.

In the folk world there are a handful of guitarists who are simply so good that I’m intimidated, just go green, gnash my teeth, and wonder why I ever pestered my parents for a guitar that Xmas when I was 12. I’m thinking of the likes of Jack Williams or Tena Moyer. Florida has two such players that I know of: Sam Pacetti and Dana Keller. If you have any love for hearing the instrument played by a master, do go see Jennings and Keller. The thing that really just gets my goat with Dana is that he’s also a world class pedal steel and dobro player. I first knew him as the latter and was blown away by his steel playing. Only a couple of years later did I hear him playing Chet on a six string . . . and it sounded just like Chet. And I mean just like it. It reminded me of the night in South Carolina when I stumbled in on Jack Williams tearing up some bluesy jazz on piano. Just ain’t fair. But equally unfair, if you play the instrument and love it half as much as I do, would be missing a chance to hear a true master.

The Seminole Theatre in downtown Homestead announces SEMINOLE SERIES TWO-FERS – Student Rush discounted tickets for all shows in the inaugural Seminole Showcase Series.
Students of any level with applicable student IDS can take advantage of the Seminole Student Two-fers rush program. On the day of the show, any students can come in person to the Seminole Theatre box office and receive “TWO-FER” tickets – TWO TICKETS FOR THE PRICE OF ONE! The Seminole Theatre encourages students to take advantage of the arts programming in the community.
The box office opens at 12:00pm on the days of performances. “Two-fer” tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, and are subject to availability. Limit of two tickets per ID.
The Seminole Showcase Series begins Friday, January 21st with Jon Secada, presented by the Seminole Cultural Theatre Inc Board of Directors. The Wailers, best known for their work with the legendary Bob Marley, roll into town on January 21st, and The Drifters will serenade serenade “Up On the Roof” on January 24th. While the Seminole Theatre’s history dates back to 1921, the building was closed in 1979 and suffered almost total devastation from Hurricane Andrew in 1992. After sitting forlorn for nearly 40 years, a restored Seminole Theatre reopened its doors on December 12, 2015 and is now celebrating its Grand Opening season.

The Seminole Theatre kicks off the first performance of the inaugural Seminole Showcase Series next Friday, January 15th with an 8:00pm performance by Jon Secada, presented by the Seminole Cultural Theatre Inc Board of Directors.
To celebrate the historic day, the Seminole is presenting a free concert in Losner Park, next door in downtown Homestead, which is open to the public. From 6:00 – 7:30pm, attendees will be treated to a free concert in the Losner Park bandshell featuring local artist Lenny Batista, performing a broad range of popular favorites from yesterday and today. Classic Rock, Pop, Country and Latin Music.
Bring your own chair or blanket and relax in the park while celebrating the rejuvenation of downtown Homestead. The Seminole Theatre lobby and bar will be open and serving drinks and tapas that can be enjoyed in the park. Free public parking is available on SW 1st street between Krome Ave and 1st Avenue.

At 8:00pm, the curtain goes up in the newly renovated Seminole Theatre, kicking off the first performance with a concert by Jon Secada. Secada first became famous for his hit single “Just Another Day”. With a career spanning over two decades, two Grammy Awards, 20 million albums sold, and starring roles on Broadway, the acclaimed, romantic sounds of Jon Secada have resulted in numerous hits in English and Spanish establishing him as one of the first bilingual artists to have international crossover success.
